Does anyone have experience with union members decerting from a union either --
* As a whole, or
* Just for a particular set of working classifications?

The idea would be to jump ship to another union.

My recommendation is to exhaust all other avenues prior to considering this option. This has dangers such as the possibility of decertification without the recognition of another union. Also, the recognition of another union does not guarantee the elimination of all your concerns.

never throw out your only chance to bargin with management. if you dont like your union do what i did get elected as a local officer. get your member's up to changing officers if they are not doing their job. all unions have the same rules to go by. what makes them stronger is the union offier's their that fight hard for the workers. dont matter if it is the teamster's ,ufcw or the rwdsu. they all go by the same rules and thier power come's from it's members.

Been an officer for different posts. And am a continuing Steering Committee member.

The officers can only do so much. And it's hard getting any strength going when nobody wants to be an officer in the first place.

I understand your goal is to 'jump' to another union. However, if one of the main issues you and your fellow members face daily is low participation, do you believe that issue will become better, stay the same, or worsen after changing unions? Also, remember that any member who does not vote in the election is counted as a 'no union' vote which means if more than half either vote "no union" or do not vote, you may face losing representation all together!

Maybe if you spoke with your council leaders about getting some union organizer's to come speak to people at your work site if your contract permit's and if it does they might can recruit some team members to come
to the next meeting which you may want to also invite a city councilman or a state rep. to spice thing's up. Write an editorial about labor union's and get advice from other local unions in your town.

What you need to realize here is that the greatest strength in a Union does not come from the letters in a name, or the elected officials. The greatest strength in a union comes from the members themselves. The solidarity and determination of Union Members is what makes any Local great. Changing the letters on your Local Hall won't change the issues in your Local.
