I am the owner of a very small janitorial company in Saint Charles, IL. We do construction clean ups and I would like to expand in that area, most office buildings and floor care clients are cutting down on janitorial services and we're feeling the economy full force. I believe we can stay strong in the construction field but on many of the recent jobs I've attempted to bid, they require janitorial companies that are in a union.
I am lost on this subject. Where do I go to find out the cost, benefits--so on and so on. Also, what union would we be, and as the owner, I have to join?
Thanks so much for your time, awaiting your response.
| Asked By: Steve Perfect on 2008-08-05 |
Hi Steve,
By far, the largest Labor Organization, which an extremely strong focus in representing Workers within Janitorial Services is the Service Employees International Union, www.SEIU.org. I recommend contacting them in order to learn what the SEIU can do for your Workers and for your business.

I was interested in moving from IL. My husband is union and isn't sure how it works to change unions. How difficult is it to make the switch? What are some of the down falls? It's not something set in stone, it's just a thought right now. We have years before we move. Just would like to know our options. Thanks
| Asked By: Amanda on 2008-07-14 |
Hi Amanda,
Some Labor Unions have Locals in many cities and states, making transfering one's membership relatively easy. - Especially if the local within the interested area of relocation is in contact with Employers which are seeking applicants for positions which the 'transferee' is qualified to perform. I would recommend your husband consult with his current local and with a local within the area to which you are interesting in moving. This will give you a much clearer picture of the reality of the situation.

I've been trying to get employment on a pipeline construction job, the pipeline is a union company so require you to join the union and purchase a book. I have been to numerous labor organizations and made many phone calls trying to complete this step, but I''ve been getting alot of nasty attitudes, I have even went to the pipeline construction site every mornig for over a week were I've seen Mexicans get hired without a union book. I feel like this is discrimination. I would like to know how can I go about obtaining a union book so I can get employed.

Hi L,
It sounds like you have been quite tenacious in your quest which I trust will pay off shortly. - You seem to be doing all the right things. However, are you certain that you contacted the correct Labor Union? Workers on large pipeline projects are typically represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, www.IUOE.org, and/or the Laborers' International Union of North America, www.LIUNA.org. As long as you're contacting the right Unions, are qualified and remain persistent (and curteous), you have a decent chance of geing hired.

and 413 (Phone: [610] 872-5328). The above phone numbers are to the Laborers' International Union of North America, www.LIUNA.org, as that is my best guess as what you're referencing. Hi Sidney,
Unfortunately, that does sound like a potential scenario (not that it would happen but that it could happen). You may wish to Consult with your Teamster Local Office Staff, specifically an Organizer. A good offense is part of every good defense - perhaps you and your coworkers could eliminate this 'threat' of the company closing the Union shop and expanding their Non-Union shop by organizing the Non-Union shop.
