Hearing Loss by the Numbers

28.6 million Americans are hearing-impaired, which corresponds to 10.3% of the American population.

Approximately half of all hearing-impaired people are of working age.

One in ten people hear so poorly that he or she could benefit from hearing aid use.

Hearing Benefits

You get dental, vision, and other health care insurance. The third most common health problem in people over 50 is hearing loss. Should you get help here too?

Modern insurance programs, offered as a part of an employment or membership, will many times include dental and vision plans. Many benefit managers must think correct vision and a nice smile are important enough to spend the extra money on that coverage. Employees and members also must think that these plans are important since they are so regularly offered.

In contrast, very few organizations offer hearing benefits as an optional part of the member or employee health plans. Perhaps they feel that hearing is not as important as vision or dental benefits. The fact is that hearing loss is the third most common chronic health problem in people over the age of 50. The first and second "places" go to bone and joint problems and cardio-vascular problems. Vision problems and teeth problems are not as common as hearing problems.

Perhaps benefit managers think that hearing benefits cost too much. According to a couple of large studies, the data suggest that communication problems - the inability to hear - may be associated with injuries on the job as often as 4 of every 10 accidents. That is, perhaps as many as 40% of all on-the-job accidents are caused or at least associated with decreased hearing ability in the injured person. So, the available data or information tells us that hearing loss affects more workers than lots of other problems.

Some statistics are in order to put hearing loss in proper perspective. Thirty million Americans suffer some form of hearing loss. Ten percent can be helped by medical or surgical treatments; however, the vast majority of hearing problems can only be address with properly prescribed hearing aids. Medical and surgical treatments are covered under most major medical plans. Hearing aids are not covered by most medical plans and are not a covered benefit under Medicare; therefore the primary treatment for hearing loss is most often overlooked and not offered.

The AHB Hearing Services Plan (HSP) is the first true hearing benefit plan in the country. The AHB HSP picks up where other benefit plans leave off, and provides access to qualified ear professionals and to all levels and brands of hearing aid technology. The AHB HSP is a voluntary, value added program; this means there are no premiums, upfront costs, nor access fees. The AHB HSP simply manages the process of treatment with hearing aids for those people with hearing problems. The plan offers quality care and products at the lowest prices. Furthermore, all administration is handled by AHB.

Under the AHB Hearing Services Plan, hearing is finally treated as the true life asset it is, and people can have a hearing benefit consistent with the other specialized care and benefit programs offered as important parts of health benefit packages. For more information call (877) 606-3742 (AHB).
