Pact Improves Wages, Recognizes Seniority

Workers at AmeriCold in Indianapolis have ratified their first Teamster contract, which includes several major improvements.

Workers at AmeriCold in Indianapolis have ratified their first Teamster contract, which includes several major improvements.

In August 2009, the unit of 140 employees won voluntary recognition after more than 70 percent of the workers signed cards to be represented. In early January, the workers voted 69-10 to ratify their first contract.

“The five-year contract provides improved wages, and it also closes the unfair two-tier wage structure that had been in place,” said Brian Buhle, Secretary-Treasurer of Indianapolis-based Local 135. “The contract also provides a seniority system, and a grievance procedure. The contract also clarifies their work rules.”

The AmeriCold organizing campaign is a coordinated and strategic national campaign led by the Teamsters Organizing Department, which assisted Local 135 in the local’s organizing victory. Teamsters Warehouse Division Director John Williams was also instrumental in Local 135’s organizing victory.
