Protect Obamacare at DC’s 7th Annual J Dilla Tribute & Hip-Hop Event Tomorrow
by Kate Thomas
For the past several years, SEIU has been part of the DC community of hip-hop lovers and healthcare advocates who’ve celebrated the legacy of James “J Dilla” Yancey. This year will be no different, as we gather together again to pay tribute to the gifted beatsmith. SEIU is co-sponsoring the 7th annual J Dilla Tribute taking place at The Fillmore tomorrow on Saturday, July 14.
J Dilla, a widely-admired hip-hop and soul producer, had his life cut short when he passed away from complications of lupus in 2006. Without health insurance, the costs associated with the care Dilla received before his death reached into the triple digits. Under Obamacare, J Dilla’s loved ones–the Yancey family–might have been able to prevent the kind of financial stress and hardship they endured due to the high cost of medical treatment.
Tomorrow night’s Dilla Tribute will feature great music – artists to perform include Slum Village, Guilty Simpson, Wes Felton and more – as well as amazing testimonies. SEIU Millennials will be at the DC Loves Dilla tribute/fundraiser tomorrow night; promoting President Obama’s landmark healthcare reform bill at the event and asking the hip-hop community to help defend and protect the law by registering to vote.• Check out the event flyer for more details on who’s going to be there.
