ExxonMobil relies largely on contractual employee Unions like International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Union or ICEM for their world-wide operations. There however exists tension between the management and workers, and ExxonMobil has been accused of gender discrimination and failure to consider basic demands of Union workers. They are known for their unfeeling attitude towards members of the Union, and refuse to consider putting them on the regular payroll. Efforts however are underway to bridge the gap and there is hope in the horizon for Union employees.
WalMart has adopted the stance of steering clear away from any association with employee Unions. They claim that while they are not opposed to the concept of other corporations employing Unions to take care of the work load, WalMart finds it unnecessary to engage in such activities owing to the extremely cordial relationships that exist between their associates and managers. This is because they believe in cultivating an environment conducive to open communication, and since they already have such efficient managerial staff, a Union would be redundant.
General Motors avails of the services of salaried as well as contractual Union employees to manage their operations. It has labor union associations with the United Auto Workers and Communication Workers of America. Of late, productivity is on a slump, bringing their cash flow to a negative amount running into billions. They have hence had to consider steps like long term idling or even closure of some of their plants to cut capacity and thereby minimize further losses. They have also been in the news recently for the legal appeal to alter the health care benefits it offers its employees.
Chevron has affiliations with various labor unions like The International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). In the United States of America, for instance, it is only less than 20% of their workforce that is represented by Unions. Chevron Corporations always ensures that it provides its employees the very best in terms of state of the art training, dispute resolution, employee satisfaction surveys and support to families of employees. In this connection, they are also open to an employee deciding to choose union representation.
Ford Motor Company utilizes it association with The United Auto Workers Union to take care of its staffing requirements. They have been known to have generally cordial relations except for a few instances of mounting tension recently, following the company’s decision to engage in expansion projects outside the United States of America, since this would cause a possible shut down of some of the factories within the country.
ConocoPhillips is an equal opportunity employer who avails of the services of Unions for its global staffing requirements, one among them being the Paper Allied-Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers International Union or PACEIU. They have very employee friendly policies and attractive compensation and benefits packages including varied insurance cover, paid vacations, savings and retirement plans, which has kept this organization out of too many disputes with them. One stray incident of a dispute with a local Union was over matters relating to medical benefits and job security.
General Electric Company engages in widespread association with Labor Unions to manage their worldwide operations; the largest among these is International Union of Electronic Workers-Communication Workers of America or the IUE-CWA which covers a large chunk of its workers. They lobby essentially for quantifying pay hikes, health care, insurance, pension and early retirement needs of employees.
The Citigroup has a non-union affiliation policy as regards it employees. It however has affiliations with various Labor Unions across the world through acquisitions that it makes of various organizations as part of its expansion activities. The group also does not have a very good reputation among its employees who form part of their investment wings, as exemplified in many of the groups’ acquisitions in South Korea where it is opined that the Citigroup is not very employee friendly.
American International Group, Inc. does not have any labor union associations. While they have not disclosed ant reason why they would not ant any of their employees to ever be represented by labor unions, one look at their employee policy reveals that employees here have not engaged in such acts of revolt because they are taken care of well, and all their interests are honored by the company.
Alliance@IBM or Communications Workers of America is Union of IBM employees, dedicated to improve their rights and benefits. This union has been formed with the view of protecting their interests in the wake of extensive off-shoring exercises carried out by IBM and stand by any employee who considers himself wronged by the management. IBM although is not all for employees forming part of this school of thought.
