SEIU: Power through Change
One of the
largest unions in the United
States is the SEIU, or Service Employees International Union. With over 1.8 million members and growing,
the SEIU is a labor force powerhouse.
Since the introduction of SEIU president Andy Stern, the union has united
over 900,000 new members under their banner. The membership is expansive with
individual members involved in a number of important industries: hospital
systems, long term care, property service, and more. The also claim to be the most diverse union,
representing large percentages of women, ethnic minorities and immigrant
workers.
The SEIU is
one of the few unions that helped form Change
to Win – a labor federation dedicated to bringing about a positive
transformation in America’s
work force. After disaffiliating from
the AFL-CIO last year, the SEIU union has focused on developing strategies to
unite the strength of non-union and union workers alike. Their goal is to unionize those who are not
part of a union in order to revolutionize the standards of living in America. They believe that strength in numbers is the
way to go.
Change is a
universal theme of the SEIU membership.
Along with their Change to Win campaign, the union has developed the Institute for Change. This is a place dedicated to developing SEIU union
leaders and strengthening the organizations they represent. The Institute has taken a unique approach to
training these leaders, and the results have definitely been noticeable. Leadership development and organizational
change are the primaries focuses of the training schedule. The SEIU believes that these elements are
essential in building a stronger and more powerful union.
