AFT: Teaching for the Future
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) International Union represents over 1.3 million teachers and education professionals in the United States. It is affiliated with the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations). Unlike many unions whose membership span into countless industries, the AFT is the primary voice of education professions only. This union is dedicated to improving public education and providing its skilled workers with the best benefits possible.
The AFT, like so many of America's unions, is involved in a multitude of issues that affects its membership. However, because of the nature of the members' jobs, the AFT confronts dilemmas that involve the people they teach as well. One such crisis the teachers face is the ever-present "achievement" debate. As the AFT puts it, "There is no question that some of our schools are failing." Most Americans can see it themselves.
However, the union members of the AFT believe that this does not have to be the case. Their campaign, Redesigning Schools to Raise Achievement (RSRA) is a fair and concise answer to the question of how to raise low achievement among America's schools. They believe that this policy, designed to reform schools not meeting a specific standard level, can alleviate the problem and restore the quality to our education system. Yet, this is just one of the many important campaigns the AFT is involved with each day. America's educational system will always face new and challenging obstacles, but we can be rest assured that the members of AFT will be there to meet them head on.
