BCTGM: Power to the Unions
Another affiliate of the AFL-CIO is the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM - http://www.bctgm.org/index.html). The union is actually the result of a merger between three different unions. Established in 1999, the BCTGM represents a wide range of members in a variety of unique industries. The union is dedicated to promoting a positive work environment for its members in the baking, confectioning, tobacco producing and grain milling industries.
One of the BCTGM's primary focuses is the Power Benefits from Union Privilege. These are benefits (both products and services) that the union has secured for its members. Many of the services that are offered are given at highly discounted rates. Just as unions provide strength in the workplace, BCTGM Power provides strength in the marketplace. They deliver the best benefits as a result of the collective buying power of over 13 million AFL-CIO union members. The union maintains that only industry leading providers are included in the benefits program; an assurance that only top quality benefits are being offered.
As with almost all union organizations, the BCTGM relies on the efforts of their organizing department. Without consistent member enrollment, a union is unable to provide many of the fundamental responsibilities that are necessary for survival in the job market. Therefore, the BCTGM has secured contracts in some of the largest companies within their respective industry (i.e. Pepsico, Kraft, General Mills, and Hersheys). However, collective bargaining is an ongoing process and a union must sustain its power within the company for future negotiations to continue.
