IAMAW: Organizing America’s
Workforce
The International
Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM or IAMAW) Union boasts an impressive 730,000 represented
members. While some unions have failed
to respond to the constant pressure of technological advancement, this is not
the case with the IAM. The membership is
spread throughout a diverse group of industries, including Aerospace,
Government, Transportation, etc.
All unions
have a number of challenges they are facing at any given point in time. It is up to the union members to pick which
battles they are interested in fighting for.
This is one reason that the IAM is always focused on the difficult task
of organization. Even after initial
unionization, unions must constantly remain steadfast and strong in order to
maintain the rights they worked so hard to achieve. The IAM is dedicated to its members, and
warns, “The importance of organizing should not be lost on any member in the
Machinists Union.”
Organizing is an on-going
activity for the collective bargaining units within IAM’s infrastructure. It is a difficult and often time-consuming
process. Politics play a large role in
becoming organized and many workers find themselves disenchanted with the whole
process. The IAM understands the plight
that many workers feel when organization is brought up, but the union is still
determined to facilitate a collective bargaining unit where there is a need.
The IAM
offers solutions to
many of the questions a workplace may be asking itself when determining whether
or not to organize. To find out more
