Union Description

IUOE: Training for the Future

The IUOE, or International Union of Operating Engineers, is a national union that represents 400,000 members.  Primarily, these members are Operating Engineers (heavy machinery, surveyors or construction workers) or Stationary Engineers.   This union is affiliated with the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations).  Members that work under this union are highly trained and highly skilled, as the IUOE offers apprenticeship programs to ensure that this is so.

Due to the intensive nature of operating engineering, the IUOE is heavily focused on apprenticeship and training.  Without this intricate organization, the IUOE would face a major employment problem.  Recently, the government has cited considerable problems within non-union apprenticeship programs.  There are many reasons for this dilemma including: restricted monitoring of programs, declination in job resources and incompetence upon completion of the program.  Conversely, the IUOE's instruction program includes a rigorous and fully instructional training schedule that takes a number of years to reach completion.  However, the results of the program are undeniably more positive than the non-union counterparts.

IUOE local unions  throughout the United States and Canada (with substantial support from the International Union) are responsible for administering these training programs to interested individuals around them.  The IUOE also works closely with many government organizations.  They offer instruction and training to those government employees that deal with dangerous and hazardous materials.  Furthermore, training is also available through Job Corps programs.

To become part of the International Union of Operating Engineers or to find out available training programs, please visit the IUOE homepage.  Trained engineers make extremely competitive salaries with some of the best benefits available.  To find a local near you, please visit the Unions.org Local Search page.
